The fate of Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar, who were convicted for Aarushi-Hemraj murder, will be decided today at Allahabad High Court.

It has been nine years since a 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar was found with her throat slit in her flat in Noida. When Hemraj, their domestic help, was suspected of killing her, his body was found on the terrace the very next day. As the murder was said to be carried out with ‘surgical precision’, police suspected it to be an insider’s job. This murder mystery aroused public interest like never before as an intriguing whodunit case. In 2013, Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar were sentenced to life in prison. They appealed against their conviction. Allahabad High Court found talwar non guilty and have got bail from this case today.

Apart from Aarushi-Hemraj murder case, have a look at other sensational murder cases that left India shell-shocked.

Pradyuman Murder Case 

This came out as one of the most shocking of murder cases, where a Standard II student Pradyuman was found with his throat slit inside the bathroom of Ryan International School, Gurugram. The post-mortem reports revealed that the cut was so gruesome that he could not have survived for more than 2-3 minutes. A bus conductor was arrested later on the charge of killing him. The case mustered public outrage for having several loopholes in the school’s security norms. With the bus conductor later backing out from his earlier confession, the case has become a mystery.

Nithari Murder Case

Moninder Singh Pandher along with his domestic help Surinder Kohli, was arrested for rape, cannibalism, pedophilia, sodomy and even organ trafficking in Nithari village, on the outskirts of Noida. Both Pandher and Surinder Kohli were convicted for five murders and were sentenced to death in the latest hearing by the CBI court at Ghaziabad.

Sunanda Pushkar Case

Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a hotel room in New Delhi, a day after the Twitter controversy that took internet by storm. A day before, a series of intimate messages, supposedly sent by the Pakistani journalist Mehar Tarar to Shashi Tharoor was revealed on Tharoor’s Twitter account. However, Tarar claimed that her account was hacked. But Pushkar accused Mehar of stalking her husband and being an ISI agent. The next day, the Tharoor couple issues a joint statement citing that the duo is happily married. The note also mentioned Sunanda’s hospitalisation after being ill.

 Shashi Tharoor discovered his wife’s body after she did not wake up from her sleep in the evening. In the initial autospy reports, she was suspected to have ended her life. But the doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences revealed that there were injury marks on her body. The autopsy indicated drug overdose, probably a combination of sedatives, medicines and alcohol

Neeraj Grover murder case 

It is one of the most gruesome murder cases of India. The body of Mumbai-based television executive Neeraj Grover was hacked into pieces and stuffed in three bags before setting it to fire in a forest. Maria Susairaj who filed his missing complaint was found to be involved in the killing with her fiancée Emile Jerome, a naval officer. He killed Neeraj in a fit of rage. Jerome took the drastic step on a suspicion that Neeraj and Maria were having an affair. He first killed Neeraj and then went to a mall to purchase a chopper, which was used to chop his body off. In 2011, a movie named ‘Not a Love Story’ was spun around this infamous murder case.

Jessica Lal Murder Case 

On April 29, 1999, Manu Sharma, the son of former Union Minister Venod Sharma shot Jessica Lall, after the lady refused to serve him liquor at the Tamarind Court restaurant in South Delhi. The case dominated headlines when Sharma was acquitted by a trial court in 2006. Following a nationwide protest, the case was taken up by Delhi High Court, which led to his life imprisonment. In 2011, a film ‘No One Killed Jessica’ was helmed around this murder case, which starred Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji.
