Many link roads in Punjab have been waiting for the Badal government to shower its kindness upon them for years. However, just one got lucky- the road that has 6 flyovers in merely 8 km stretch. Yes, it is starting from Chandigarh Border to T-point of Siswan, which is heading to New Chandigarh. Surprisingly, this road was well-constructed with a cost of Rs 72 crore.
Till about a few months back, there was a plan of constructing only two flyovers over Jayanti ki Rao and Siswan river but suddenly, the Punjab Government introduced a twist in its strategy for this particular road. The government has passed nearly Rs 100 crore funds to construct these bridges.
As per the sources, this changed strategy is due to New Chandigarh Master Plan. In 2007, the government had hired a Singapore-based consultant agency to prepare the master plan of Mullunpur Local Planning Area. This company had handed over the master plan to government in 2008. Under this plan only, this particular Siswan T Point road strategy was prepared. By the year 2013, the government changed its mind and named Mullanpur as New Chandigarh and also hired a new private agency to evaluate the master plan.
This agency has given new ideas for the master plan and has submitted a revised layout plan report for New Chandigarh as well. Due to this new strategy, the government is now constructing these 6 flyovers on an 8 Km long road.
As per Urban Department Officials, this plan has been made due to the impending heavy traffic problems. Initially, this road was constructed after considering construction work in this area. In 2014-2015, it was seen that this road may have major traffic problem so the government is constructing these flyovers.
These flyovers would be helpful for group housing societies and suburban villages. A senior official said while coming towards the main road from the link road, there would be lesser chances of accidents.
As per the changed policy, just before and ahead of the Siswan River, there would be two flyovers. These bridges would be used as underpasses, too. Along with these, there would be a bridge with proposed Medicity although Siswan T Point Bridge is complete.
