First ever Robotic pediatric Surgery at PGIMER

The Department of Pediatric Surgery, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, has started doing Pediatric Robotic Surgery. The first case was successfully operated today on an 11 year old child who had obstruction in his kidneys.  The child is doing well and is planned to be discharged by tomorrow.

The child hails from a farmer’s family in Ludhiana and was having problems for past 4 years. Under the Headship of Prof Ram Samujh, Head of Pediatric Surgery, the team who accomplished this included Dr Ravi Kanojia, Dr Monika Bawa, Dr Vineet Binu, Dr Ravi Mohan, Dr Borah and Dr Neeru Sahni who was the anaesthesia in charge.

There was invaluable support from Sister Premlata, in charge Robotic OT complex. The Director PGIMER Prof Jagat Ram and Prof Arup Mandal were instrumental in encouraging the department for initiating this new procedure. The team is now looking forward to offer this new facility from PGIMER to the pediatric surgery patients coming here.

This surgical procedure is more precise which helps in faster recovery of the patient. PGIMER has become the first Government Sector Hospital in the country to offer this facility. Presently no government hospital in Indiais doing Pediatric Robotic Surgery. The Departments of Urology, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Otolaryngology of our Institute are already offering this facility to the adult patients for the last 3 years.
