- Punjab Government committed to better health on the Occasion of “Global IDD Prevention Day”

Its Global IDD Prevention Day and today it was celebrated all over Punjab on 21st October 2016.Speaking on the occasion Surjit Kumar Jiyani, Health Minister, Punjab said that Iodine Deficiency Disorders is an important Public Health issue of the World today. There is an increasing evidence of wide-spread distribution of environmental iodine deficiency not only in the Himalayan region but also in the plains, Riverine areas and even in coastal regions. He added that NIDDCP is being effectively implemented in Punjab.
Ms Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health Punjab said that State specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been designed for salt & urine sample collection, transportation & testing in State IDD Lab, Chandigarh, which is first of its kind in India. She added that to know the prevalence of Iodine Deficiency Disorders in the State of Punjab, all 22 districts have been successfully surveyed by the State with assistance of School of Public Health, PGIMER Chandigarh.
Mr. Hussan Lal, Commissioner, Food and Drug Administration Punjab said that notification has already been issued regarding ban on sale of non-iodized salt as per section 2.3.12 of FSSAI Act. He further said that circular has also been issued to all Food safety Officers for taking two salt samples every month under FSSAI Act.
Dr H S Bali, Director Family Welfare said that Awareness material has been distributed to all the districts for distribution up to Block Level Health Institutionswhich includes posters regarding 21st October “Global IDD Prevention day” so that field workers are sensitized about the importance of iodized salt & ill effects caused due to iodine deficiency. He further saidthat on the occasion of Global IDD Prevention Day at State level, exhibition regarding importance of iodized salt has been organized at State Headquarter from 21st October -28th October 2016. At District Level, 21st October-28th October, 2016 will be celebrated as Global IDD Prevention Week. During this week, districts will organize Loud Speaker campaign upto block level and Competitions (essay, slogan writing, race, painting etc.) among school children, Seminars, Exhibitions & Awareness Camps to make people aware about importance of iodized Salt and ill -effects of Iodine deficiency.
