A government school in Gopalganj, Bihar banned a woman Sunita Kuwar, from cooking food for midday meals, just because she is a widow and they believe eating food cooked by her will bring them bad luck. This all started when she was removed in January 2014 but she didn’t give up and kept fighting her struggles against this social evil practice.

Residents of Kalyanpur village had not merely protested against preparation of midday meal by the widow but had even forced the school to be closed since Wednesday last.

The widow, who has two minor children, had approached Gopalganj district magistrate (DM) Rahul Kumar on Thursday to help her. She was among six women engaged in cooking food for children in the school under midday meal scheme and was paid Rs 1000 per month as her salary.

True to his words, Rahul Kumar not only helped her but he also set an example to bring awareness against following blind superstition  – He made Sunita cook for him and ate the meal in full view of the villagers.

Following the DM’s intervention, the villagers withdrew their protest and the locks were removed from the school on Friday.

“I along with district education officer visited the school today and ate the midday meal prepared by the lady for students,” Kumar said.

The DM said the woman had resumed her duties in the school and he had asked officials to see why the villagers stopped her from cooking food.

He, along with the district education officer did something that not only helped Sunita, but also set an example for people blindly believing in these superstitions and social evil practices. We Salute Mr Rahul Kumar for putting his best efforts to not only bring awareness against superstition but also helping Sunita get her livelihood back.
